Orthodontics for Teens

Why Ages 11–15 Are Ideal for Orthodontic Treatment

Between the ages of 11 and 15 is the most common time for orthodontic treatment, and for good reasons. By 12, most if not all of the permanent teeth have erupted and are in place, and crooked teeth, gaps and bad bites can easily be detected. These problems will hardly ever correct themselves, so this is when most parents decide to seek orthodontic treatment.

This is also a good time for orthodontic treatment because many negative associations of braces are not present. Many children in this age range undergo orthodontic treatment, and children are very often able to be convinced to wear braces because they see their friends wearing them, too, and want to fit in.

Besides the benefits of fitting in with their friends, children at this age have high metabolisms, which can help shorten overall treatment time and reduce the discomfort of orthodontic treatment.

Contact our office for an initial FREE examination, and we will be able to determine the best time for the treatment and outline: the treatment plan, the treatment duration expected, and the approximate cost for the treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my teeth straighten out as they grow?2026-06-12T14:48:11+00:00

No, they will not. The space available for the front teeth does not increase as you grow. In most people, after the permanent molars erupt, the space available for the front teeth decreases with age.

Can I schedule all of my appointments after school?2026-06-12T14:48:28+00:00

Most routine orthodontic appointments are scheduled after school. We strive to accommodate our students and minimize the amount of school they miss by reserving the hours between 3 and 5 o’clock for their wire change appointments. Some of the longer procedures, such as getting braces on, or getting braces off can only be done early in the day.

Can I drop my child off for an appointment?2026-06-12T14:48:43+00:00

Yes. We understand your busy schedule, and we are happy to help you make the most of your time. On some occasions, we may request to speak with a parent when they return, so we ask that parents check in with their patient manager before dropping off their child.

Can I return to school the day I receive my braces?2026-06-12T14:48:57+00:00

Yes. There is no reason not to return to school following orthodontic appointment.

Can I still play sports?2026-06-12T14:49:11+00:00

Yes. We recommend a mouth guard for all sports.
